Valentine’s Day alone? No problem!

My guilty pleasure.

No, really!

I spent the entire today in class and in lab, with my beau in another city. I’d honestly forgotten that it was Valentine’s Day until I got a text from Dark. I spent my day having to interact with people I really didn’t want to interact with. You know those people in a position of authority who like to just bring down the spirits of everyone else in the room, just because they can.

But Valentine’s Day can be spent showing yourself some love, whether you have a partner or not, or if you’re separated from them. Why not take advantage of a day to pamper yourself?

Knowing I’d be spending a rough day today, I started my Valentine’s Day last night with a nice bubble bath – the perfect way to relax and unwind on a cold winter’s day!

I used bubble bath I’d bought from Loblaws – inexpensive yet effective. I think it was only around $5.00 CAD. This has a scent of “warm caramellized pear and vanilla”, meant for comfort and relaxation. I think a bubble bath is always relaxing in itself, though. I also added a few capfuls of jojoba oil for extra soft skin!

The oil burner is from Bath and Body Works for about $15.00 CAD, and I got The Body Shop’s fragrance oil in the scent The Spirit of Moonflower as a gift from my aunt when I was young, along with a lamp ring. I really like clean, sweet, and light fragrances. I’m not a big fan of heavy flowery scents or strong spices. My favourites are fruity fragrances, peppermint, and the odd indescribable ones like this one. Bath and Body Works staff are really adamant about only putting oil on the burner, but I found the scent much too strong as the oil vapourized much too quickly. So I added in a good amount of water so that the oil was but a few drops in it, making for a very gradual dispersion of the fragrance. And found that there really were no grounds for their insistence of burning only oil.

Afterwards, I put on a nice face mask and spent the evening watching my favourite romantic movies! Well, okay, just basically everything I had on my hard drive. I watched The Notebook for what must be the fifth time, and I was bawling by the end of it. Who here loves the portrayal of Allie and Noah by Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling? *heart melts* I don’t think I need say any more.

(As an aside, I didn’t know they had thermos-lined lunchbags back then… Shouldn’t he be holding a brown paper bag or something instead?)

After a rough day in the lab, I opened my inbox to find a VIB NARS GWP of $35.00 CAD from Sephora. I had originally planned to skip my night class tonight to go for a girls’ Valentine’s night out with angelandthings, so I was feeling no qualms about skipping tonight’s class to go shopping. Besides, the lecturer is terrible and I’ve already discerned within the first 15 minutes of the first class that it is impossible to pay attention to him because he is teaching me nothing that is not already on his slides.

So off I went to the mall. I had no intention to visit any store but Sephora, but unfortunately, a Trade Secrets crossed my path and I had to go in to examine any new seasonal Essie nail polishes. They usually never have them in stock, so I didn’t expect to buy anything. Woe to my wallet. 😦

[Left to right: Navigate Her, To Buy or Not To Buy, and Raise Awareness (not the 2012 Spring collection, I just wanted a bubbly pink!)]

At Sephora, I picked up the Tanda Zap for $49.00 CAD, which I’d learned of from vivianism. I can’t wait to try this myself, and if it’s actually effective without being harmful to my sensitive skin, it would make a wonderful gift.

The Tanda Zap comes with three AAA batteries as well as a coupon for $5.00 off your next purchase of the Tanda Zap, which was a nice surprise. This is a handy little device that claims to be an advanced acne clearing device, but only has 1000 uses. Each use consists of a 2-minute cycle where the Tanda Zap emits a blue light that is supposedly harmful to the bacteria within a pimple. It also vibrates and warms up to open up your pores. For what must be the first time in my life, I am actually willing for pimple (just one, no more, and in an inconspicuous spot, please) so that I could try this out.

And here’s the NARS GWP for Valentine’s Day:

Say hello to the first NARS products I’ve ever owned! Included in the set are (left to right):

  1. 2.5 g Laguna bronzing powder
  2. 2.5 g Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base
  3. 8 mL Orgasm Illuminator
  4. a cute black cloth bag

The eyeshadow base was what had me tearing off to Sephora. I have the worst time trying to keep on my eye makeup, regardless of the brands or products I use. The most reputable eye primers have done little to help. When angelandthings told me that the NARS eye primer was also raved about, I had initially intended to try to get a sample. I must say that Sephora’s Valentine GWP has given me an even better opportunity for me to try it out 🙂

This is an exceptionally good gift for Sephora’s VIB’s. I would say this is a set worthy of the 500-point perk, maybe with an item or two added. If there are any left, you Canadian girls need to run in to your local Sephora and pick this up! Toronto’s Eaton Centre was already cleaned out by the time I called at 6 pm, but for you Londoners, this NARS set should still be available tomorrow morning and early afternoon at White Oaks. No guarantees for the evening, though.

Just before I left, I had to get myself some ice cream from the Marble Slab Creamery:

Marble Slab has unique flavours of ice cream where you can choose to put in “mixin’s”, such as sliced almonds, graham crackers, marshmallows, and strawberries to name a few. They mix it all up with your ice cream on a cold slab of marble and serve it either in a cup or a cone. I got Irish Cream ice cream with Ferrero Rocher. Yum!

I am thoroughly satisfied with how I’d begun my Valentine’s Day, and how I’m ending it here. I feel like I have given myself a treat for the hard work I’ve put in the past few days. And since I couldn’t spend it with the one I love, or the friends I love, I spent it loving me.

So go ahead, pamper yourself. Play with your makeup, whip out your favourite mask, buy those shoes you’ve wanted for 4 months, open that box of chocolate, dress like a princess, and sleep like a baby. We all deserve a day where we feel loved. Be comfortable, feel beautiful, and love who you are.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

  1. I hope the serphoras in Winnipeg still have the NARS GWP when I go tomorrow…. Since there’s two Sephora there… I hope at least one of them will have some left LOL. I am really excited to try the bronzer haha.

Also, I am extremely envious that you have time to take a bubble bath and shop and watch The Notebook! Must do all those tomorrow, when I get home! 🙂 I think it’s time for a Lush haul for me lol!

    • You definitely deserve to pamper yourself! I hope that Winnipeg Sephoras still have the GWP, too – it’s definitely worth it, when compared to other VIB GWP’s. Big cities like Toronto always run out of giveaways within the day and the stores are always packed 😦

  2. I say pamper yourself every chance you get. Life is too short to worry about what could have been or what should or shouldn’t be. This is a great post and I perform this kind of pampering for myself. Enjoy life!
