Paint is my Photoshop substitute

I’ve chosen a new theme for my blog, but I didn’t quite like the default background so I decided to make my own. Now, I don’t own Photoshop, so I opened up good old Windows Paint 🙂 Some lines and colours  later, here are the versions I came up with:

Feel free to use them, but please link back and/or give credit!

Looking at them now, I’m already inspired for two new backgrounds I want to create…!

  1. How did you change your background theme? Did you purchase the annual package whereby you can have your own domain and custom design your blog page?

I was planning to subscribe to their package after seeing that most of their themes were not that good and it sounds great to have your own domain link. 🙂 But it’s not cheap at all. USD$99 for a year!

  2. Hey Siaw (may I call you Siaw? haha),

No, I definitely didn’t pay for a custom domain and for custom design – that’s way too pricey for me, since this blog is more like a hobby for me right now. And there is only so much money a student has in her pocket while also satisfying her shopping needs! 😉

There are actually quite a few workable themes on WordPress that you can customize yourself. Look for ones that allow custom headers and/or backgrounds (a lot of them!). Some themes also have options for you to choose what links you want to put at the top, not just your Pages. Others also let you choose how many columns you want to have displayed.

There are definitely limitations to what you can do with free themes, but most of them actually allow some flexibility for your creativity. Of course, there are also some themes that are very fixed and simple – for those who don’t want to bother with anything fancy.

What I did was I went through all the themes available ( and made a list of those I liked, then chose the one I thought was most suitable. You can always change it if you don’t like it, this is my fourth layout 🙂

Depending on your theme, you will have different options under the “Appearance” tab on your Dashboard. If your theme has a customizable background, you can click the “Background” link under “Appearance” and either upload an image you want to use, or choose a colour using a 6-character colour code. There is also a link that says “Select a Colour” which pops up a colour wheel and after you choose what you like, it will input the colour code for you directly. I chose to upload my own image, which was just a picture I made on Paint.

Hope this helps, not sure if this was what you were looking for. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions! 🙂

    • Sure, you can call me Siaw. 🙂

Ah … I never thought that free WordPress can custom change that much. Whenever I tried to, I am always being restricted.

Thank you so much for the information. Shall try it when I found the right theme the next time I change my layout again. 🙂

      • Actually, you can change the background and add a header to the theme you have now. Here is what my blog would look like if I used your theme, with the same custom header and custom background:
