OOTD and FOTD for the Cold Weather

It’s been below 0°C (or 32°F for all you other folks) all day today and I always have trouble dressing for cold weather. I usually end up in my skinny Bootlegger jeans and a t-shirt under a nice warm hoodie. I’m clearly deviating from the norm today. There’s no natural light today and I have no place in the house suitable for a photo shoot. So, I apologize in advance for my distracting Pokemon poster (yes, I did line up and watch the movie in theatres back in ’99 and got some exclusive Pokemon cards out of it).

What I’m wearing:

  • Brown sweater dress from Forever 21
  • White tank top (underneath, not visible) from Forever 21
  • Black tights from Forever 21
  • Maroon knee-high socks from Forever 21
  • Forest green crochet infinity scarf from Jacob
  • Black bow belt from Hong Kong (maybe G2000?)

I did not realize how many things I was wearing from Forever 21 until I broke it down just now. But it’s definitely a place to find multiple inexpensive layering pieces. I believe I got the belt with a sheath dress I bought in Hong Kong at G2000.

I also love my forest green crochet infinity scarf from Jacob – it’s their most popular scarf. I also got one in maroon for my sister. She had asked for an infinity scarf for Christmas and I couldn’t decide between the colours so I bought them both!

I bunched up my knee-high socks around my ankles because I was wearing ankle booties and just wanted the maroon to peek out over the top. It would’ve made me look shorter if I pulled them up to my knees by vissually cutting across the length of my legs. Plus, I didn’t like the look of too-high socks with my ankle boots.

Because the weather was cold today, I tried to stick with mostly moisturizing products for my face. Granted, I also can’t drag myself out of bed until 20 minutes before I have to leave the house, so it had to be quick and easy. Actually, I had to leave 10 minutes later than usual today because I had to slather makeup on my face haha.

What I used in order:

  • Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Flawless Wear Concealer in 08 Warm Light Medium
  • Benefit Erase Paste in 02 Medium
  • Holika Holika Petit BB Cream – Watery
  • Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Foundation Powder in 06
  • theBalm Hot Mama! blush
  • NARS Laguna bronzer
  • NARS Dolce Vita lipstick

The Estee Lauder concealer is my current favourite because it never settles into the fine lines under my eyes. I normally don’t use two concealers at the same time, but I had a serious pimple problem.

I love the Watery Holika Holika BB Cream and I think I’m almost done the tube, although some of that can be attributed to having it spilled all over me when I was on the plane en route to Hong Kong last year. As a side note, DO NOT bring tubes with you on the plane, or at least don’t open them while you’re in the air. The air pressure inside the bottle is at the pressure that you last opened the bottle: on the ground. Air pressure on the ground is higher than the air pressure in the cabin when you’re at such a high altitude. Because the tube is so flexible, the BB cream inside the tube started squirting all over my lap when I opened it. I had a premonition that it would happen, but after I watched Bubzbeauty’s airplane beauty video, I figured that hey, if she can bring tubes on board no problem, so can I. I should’ve trusted my instincts (and whatever I learned in too many years of physics class, duh). Don’t do it! I have a BB cream-stained hoodie to attest to that. Make sure that any containers you bring on board are hard solid containers that can’t be squeezed by pressure.

I picked up the Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Foundation Powder during the recent 20% off for VIBs sale at Sephora. I had gotten a bit of a tan over the summer and all my BB creams were looking ghastly on me, so I wanted a powder that would neutralize the colour to my actual skin colour but be fine enough as a setting powder. I wanted to be able to correct the BB creams that are too pink for me, as well.

TheBalm Hot Mama and NARS Laguna are my go-to blush and bronzer – they were the first blush and bronzer I owned. The Dolce Vita lipstick from NARS is also the first lipstick I bought and it is my favourite – it’s the perfect my-lips-but-better shade. My lips are especially flaky during the winter, but Dolce Vita doesn’t dry my lips out or accentuate any flakiness. As you can tell, it’s on its last legs so it will probably be the first lipstick I ever finish, too!

How do you dress in the cold weather? I would love some ideas because I always have trouble trying to piece together winter outfits. It’s hard to look nice and be able to stay warm at the same time!

  1. I dress in a t-shirt + zip-up hoodie… or just a pullover + jeans + my TNA winter jacket. When weather hits -10 I do not bother to dress nice to class… not very helpful here am I? :p

And you look so cuteee! Love your make up look!

  2. Your outfit looks so cute and warm! Love it!

  3. Ahh I always wear my infinity scarf during the winter time too..and usually tights that have fleece or wool if I’m going out. I thought it was freezing today, but it must be even colder in Toronto!! For a typical work day, I throw on jeans + a cozy sweater with a bunch of layers underneath!

I’ve had mix-tube problems. My hand creams are usually ok on the plane but one time I had a tube of something that did have a pressure problem =.=

  4. I like how you layered a forest green scarf over a grey sweater. Layering is the key to staying warm in the winter. Then when indoors, you can remove layers as need be.

  5. I never thought about opening products on an airplane! Thanks for the tip. Also – love your outfit. It’s pretty cold where I live so I know the struggle of looking nice and beig warm but that dress seems like a great solution! I’ll have to make a trip to forever 21 after christmas!

    • Thanks! The one problem I always have with Forever 21 is that I can never find what I’m looking for. But when I’m not looking for anything specific, I always make great discoveries!
